Score My Designs on Threadless T-shirts (To Be Unfinished)

December 26, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Both works are out of the running. It’s always hard making popular and yet meaningful works. It’s the hardest kind of work, it’s not just only a good work. There’s a difference, there’s a need to have great understanding of taste. It’s easy to know what you like, but it’s hard to understand what people want. Totally different game from exhibiting in the galleries or doing art shows.

Got to figure out what’s a nice t-shirt concept. I think humour is immensely important and execution. Clear and direct signals. A great illustration always helps. But I’ll let these ideas slowly sink in, otherwise the next work will seem really forced.

At least now I have a place to hone my aesthetics without cost.

Thanks to all!

Score My Designs on Threadless T-shirts

December 25, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I thought I try submitting a couple of designs. Vote for me. Thanks!

A pity that these are earlier versions, Threadless took some time to get them approved. I have since made improvements and they are already screenprinted on paper. I will provide some images soon!

Weirdest Drawings Begin On a Monday

This one seems to be going into one weird adventure. I think I always draw the best on a Monday. Maybe because I feel fresh. Rubber stamps, watercolour, black ink…

Making a Silkcreened T-Shirt

December 16, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Just a quick look at some parts of t-shirt making. It’s my first time printing on shirts. Like I said, the bazaar pushes us to make things. It’s a work that’s been procrastinating way too long.

The positive is positioned on the shirt to be printed. This is called positive to screen registration (to align the image to the intended position on the shirt). There’s another way to register which is by using an overlay, but that requires the screen to be inked/flooded first, it’s a little risky because textile inks dry quick, and while registering, the inks may dry and clot the screen. I should have been printing on a t-shirt press, but I’m actually making only one print a screen and don’t really have to worry about continuing an edition.

T-shirts at Post-Museum’s First Bazaar

December 16, 2007 · Leave a Comment

We have been selling some shirts in Post-Musuem’s first bazaar during the weekend. I hope this can continue to be a monthly event in the long term. It’s actually a great opportunity for us to present our new artistic discoveries to people. And also a great motivation for us to make more new works for everyone who has been following our progress and expecting greater things from us. Making new works and giving you surprises are to us saying thanks for all the support!

This time round we brought rubber stamps and t-shirts that we silkscreened by hand. We really hope to develop the t-shirts more into a kind of artwork than as a range of merchandise. Somewhat like an insertion of art into the public sphere/everyday through t-shirts (walking art?). Maybe t-shirts with interesting drawings and greater meanings rather than one that flashes huge logos. And perhaps to introduce people into printmaking using t-shirts as a more accessible/interesting medium, because they are essentially prints too. How the public engages with art and its position in everyday life are some important issues for us.

Hope to make more fun works! See you.

Our spot at the bazaar. I’m holding Choonlin’s shirt.

Another Choonlin’s shirt.
